Is Wash West Haunted?

We’re trying to find out! Tell us your true spooky stories about our neighborhood. We will share your stories on our social media pages (credited or anonymously!). You can also come tell your story in person at our Halloween event on October 30th at Seger Park!

Annual Fall Clean Up – Dec 3

Mark your calendar for the annual WSWCA-hosted clean up day – in partnership with Philadelphia Streets Department.

Saturday December 3 from 9AM – 2PM.

Supplies available for pick up at Seger Park. More info to follow.

WSWCA Board Elections

Thank you to all who submitted their interest to join the WSWCA Board of Directors. As noted in last week’s ePost, the November meeting (and voting) will be postponed to Tuesday 11/15 to avoid conflict with the General PA elections.

Not able to make it to the November General Meeting to vote?

Absentee ballots will be available with a link in the next ePost 11/1. Ballots must be received by Thursday November 10th – 5 days before the election.

Howl-O-Ween at Seger

Sunday, October 30 from 5-6 PM

Join the Seger Dog Park folks for a costume party. Both adult and dog must be in costume to enter the contest, but all dogs are welcome! 

Check out their Instagram to stay in the know – that’s how I just found out they moved the date due to the Phillies World Series schedule! 

Kitty Fosters needed

Morris Animal Refuge is need of foster parents for some new kittens they just received. See the cute little ones on their instagram page, or head over to their website to sign up as a Foster Parent.

National Rx Take Back Day

Did you know that dumping your old prescriptions into the toilet is bad for the environment? They pollute our waterways which is used for drinking water. 

The DEA is hosting a “take back” day this Saturday 10/29. Find a collection site near you. As of this moment, the closest ones to WSW are St. Joe’s Center City site on 43rd Street, and the Vet Admin Medical Center off University Ave. 

Independence Library

If you rely on the Independence Library for holds, or other indoor activities, I recommend you sign up for their newsletter updates here. They have unexpected change of hours due to staffing shortages, but are great at sending email updates to keep folks aware. Current schedule is also listed on their website. 

McCall School fundraiser

McCall HSA has lots of creative fundraising efforts underway. Here’s another way to support the local award winning public school, while providing something on your shopping list.

Hearing Aids Now OTC

President Biden’s Executive Order called on the FDA to make hearing aids available over the counter – without a prescription. You can now buy hearing aids at Walgreens, CVS, Wal Mart and Best Buy for a fraction of the cost.

Love Your Park – Nov 12 Saturday

The time has come for the annual Fall clean up of the parks by volunteer organizers. We have 5 parks in easy walking distance for you to show your love. Starr Garden, Seger Park, Kahn Park, Hawthorn Park and our community garden on South Street. Find out more & register for the event here. 

This event is appropriate for volunteers of all ages. Just opening the bags is an adventure!

Define Art, History & Storytelling

The City of Philadelphia is developing a pilot program to broaden how we define art, history, and storytelling in our city.

The survey begins with inviting community members and leaders to help identify themes and issues. This will inform the framework we use to identify the cultural resources that tell a rich and inclusive story of PhiladelphiaTake the Survey here. 

Student Loan Forgiveness

The US Government is accepting applications to help refine the processes ahead of the official form launch. If you submit an application, it will be processed when the form officially launches, and you won’t need to resubmit.

Completing the application takes less than 5 minutes, and you don’t need to log in or provide any documents. Sign up here.

Linens for Morris Animal Refuge

Linens are essential in making pups feel comfortable at the shelter! If you have any old sheets, blankets or towels, please consider donating them to the shelter.

You can drop off donations at our locations any day of the week between 11am and 4pm.

Day of the Dead

Fleisher Art invites you to the tenth anniversary of the Day of the Dead at Fleisher, organized by La Calaca Flaca (Skinny Skeleton) on October 29. On this special day, join the community in a procession through South Philadelphia, which ends with a celebration at Fleisher!

Philadelphia is providing free food for residents. Call 311 or visit phila.gov/food to find food and meals in your neighborhood. No ID or proof of income is required.

Library Playgroup – Fridays 10-11:30

Just outside of the neighborhood, but close enough to share. The Charles Santore Library at 932 S. 7th Street is hosting Playgroups weekly. They also host a variety of other things. Check them out here. 

Build our tree canopy – for FREE

The Wash West Tree Tenders want to help you add to our neighborhood tree canopy. We work with PHS to plant bare-root trees bi-annually and we are planning for the next planting now.
